Door still open for Mikel Obi, others to make 2019 AFCON squad – Gernot Rohr says

Super Eagles Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr has said that the door is open for Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel to be included in the Super Eagles squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The international future of the central midfielder has been covered in mist due to his unavailability for the national team’s last five matches since the 2018 World Cup ended.

Mikel was not in the Super Eagles squad that was beaten 2-0 by South Africa on matchday one of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers because he was still recovering from injury when the game was played.

”Mikel was injured, had problems with the knee, he played again and was injured again and he was not available,” Rohr told reporters. ”I am in touch with him and the day he will be fit and ready the door is open for him.
”But you know they have to play at the club, to show us they are ready, it is the same with the captain like other players.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has given the Technical crew of Super Eagles few weeks to submit their preparation plans for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Cameroon.

The federation made the declaration yesterday during its Executive Committee meeting in Delta State capital, Asaba, after Nigeria were held to a goalless draw by Uganda in an international friendly match.

The communiqué from meeting stated that Gernot Rohr has been mandated to submit a preparation blueprint within a couple of weeks while disclosing that available windows for friendly matches before the championship would be fully utilized.
