Sadio Mane’s Goal Wrongly Ruled Out For Offside Against Arsenal As Referee Reviews Decision

Referee Peter Walton has given his view on the Liverpool goal ruled out as offside in the first half against Arsenal.

Sadio Mane put away the rebound after a Roberto Firmino shot failed to beat Bernd Leno from a Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery to find the two runners over the top.

Arsenal had started the game well with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looking dangerous and Henrikh Mkhitaryan being denied a potential penalty after he was clattered by Alisson Becker in the visitors’ box.

Speaking as a pundit on BT Sport, Walton reviewed the footage of the incident and decided that Liverpool had been unfairly penalised for an incorrect decision.

“The ball’s coming over, he is in an offisde position but he’s not active,” said the former Premier League official on Mane’s movement in the first phase of play as Alexander-Arnold’s pass entered the box.

“In the second phase of play, Mane is clearly behind the ball and being played onside.

“It’s a good goal.”

Arsenal can count themselves lucky that the officials at the Emirates misjudged the positioning of Mane for the shot although the Gunners can point to Alisson’s challenge on Mkhitaryan earlier in the game as an example of decisions cancelling each other out.
