There are some stunning facts about the life and times of the famous, former United States (US) president, late Herbert Walker Bush, who died on Friday, November 30, in Houston.

1. Born into a wealthy and politically vibrant family on June 12, 1924 in Massachusetts George, Herbert Walker Bush was the son of Dorothy Walker Bush and Prescott Sheldon Bush, an ex-senator of the United States (US) from Connecticut.

2. Having attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Bush held several leadership positions, including senior class president, student council secretary, and captain of both the varsity baseball and soccer teams.

3. Bush enlisted in the US Navy on his 18th birthday, the same day he graduated from high school, So that in 1943, he was the youngest pilot in the Navy.

4. Two years later (1945), Bush, then 21 years old, got married to 16-year-old Barbara Pierce. The marriage produced six children, four sons and two daughters.

5. By the time he ended his military career in 1945, Bush had flown 58 combat missions during World War II. He was also awarded multiple military decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals. The San Jacinto, the aircraft carrier on which he served, was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.

6. He attended Yale University and graduated in 1948 with a degree in economics.

7. Just like his father, Bush was a member of the Yale cheerleading squad, a service in which his oldest son, George W. Bush, also found himself useful when he attended the same institution.

8. In 1992, at a state dinner in Japan, Bush fell ill with the flu and threw up into the lap of Japan’s then prime minister, Kiichi Miyazawa. He collapsed in his chair and fainted before the first lady and secret service agents rushed to help him. The incident was a ready recipe for a drama piece, the late-night comedy Saturday Night Live, with comedian Dana Carvey acting as Bush.

9. Between 1981 and 1989, he was the vice president of the US under Ronald Reagan. In 1989, Bush defeated Michael Dukakis, the then governor of Massachusetts and served as the 41st president of the the nation until 1993.

10. When Bush died in 2018, she had been married to George for 73 years. They were the longest married couple in presidential history.
